Employee Spotlight: Abby Scheer

Originally from Virginia, Abby Scheer spent her childhood nestled in the scenic mountains of Roanoke, where the Blue Ridge Parkway sparked a lifelong love of nature and tranquility. Summers and holidays brought her to North Carolina, where she connected with her Chapel Hill and Pinehurst roots—developing a taste for North Carolina peaches and a strong work ethic from time spent on her family’s farm.

Abby attended Davidson College, where a freshman astronomy class led to meeting her future husband. After working at the American Board of Pediatrics in Chapel Hill, she pursued a Master’s in Information Science at The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Her journey into data management began in the University of North Carolina’s Psychiatry Department and eventually led her to the Duke Center for Autism and Brain Development, where she now plays a vital role in supporting research through innovative data solutions.

At the autism center, Abby thrives on the variety and challenge of her work. She finds deep fulfillment in helping colleagues with their data needs—whether big or small—and takes pride in contributing to autism research that improves lives. Looking ahead, Abby is committed to growing her skills and continuing her career at Duke. She’s passionate about lifelong learning and values the opportunities Duke provides for professional development. Outside of work, she’s a devoted parent to two teenagers and cherishes time spent with family.

Fun fact: Abby may be the first in her large extended NC family to work at Duke—breaking a long-standing tradition of University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill alumni and employees. Though she was raised to be a Tarheel, she proudly declares her loyalty to Duke, saying, “Having experienced both sides, I’d choose Duke any day!”

Thank you, Abby, for your dedication, positivity, and the many ways you help move our mission forward. We’re so lucky to have you on the team!
