Employee Spotlight: Alex Reed

Originally from the sunny city of Escondido, California, just north of San Diego, Alex Reed completed both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of California San Diego before making the cross‑country move to North Carolina. The transition came when his wife began studying at Duke Law School, and soon after, Alex joined Duke University as a biostatistician in the research lab of Dr. Virginia Kraus, where he studied proteomics to better understand osteoarthritis. A few years later, he stepped into his current role within Duke’s Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design Core in the Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics.

Alex’s future goals include continuing to deepen his understanding of complex statistical methods and developing his skills as a mentor as he advances in his career. He is passionate about statistical learning and is excited about growing into a leadership role in the years ahead.

When asked what he enjoys most about working with the Autism Center, Alex says it’s the people, describing everyone as incredibly friendly and deeply committed to producing high‑quality research. Through his role, Alex contributes to three major collaborations across Duke: the Autism Center of Excellence, the Transplant Center, and the Pharmacy Residents program.

Outside of work, Alex enjoys exploring the outdoors with his wife, especially hiking and traveling to the mountains and beaches of North Carolina. He also loves spending time with family and friends during the holidays. At home, he and his wife share their space with one very loved cat named Willow.

We are grateful for Alex’s expertise, kindness, and dedication to supporting high‑quality research across Duke. Thank you, Alex, for all you bring to our community!
