Employee Spotlight: Billy Carson

Billy Carson, originally from Hilliard, Ohio, has been with the Duke Autism Center since 2019. He earned his bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering from Ohio State University and then relocated to North Carolina to continue his studies at Duke University. Currently, Billy is in the final stretch of his PhD program in biomedical engineering under the guidance of Dr. David Carlson. His research focuses on employing interpretable machine learning techniques to understand brain activity in children with autism. After earning his PhD, Billy aims to find a postdoctoral position where he can continue exploring the brain and neurodevelopmental disorders.

At the autism center, Billy plays a crucial role in various projects, including the COMET and HERO studies, and contributes to sharing results through local and international conferences, research publications, and presentations with stakeholders like the National Institute of Health. He takes great pride in his work, finding fulfillment in tackling meaningful problems with the potential to make a positive impact on others.

Beyond his professional and academic pursuits, Billy enjoys music. As a music theory minor from Ohio State, he dabbles in electronic music production. During his spare time, Billy can also be found outdoors bouldering, running in half marathons, baking fresh loaves of sourdough bread, or sipping on coffee made using his personally crafted and perfected pour-over coffee recipe. We are so fortunate to have Billy on our team, not only as a talented researcher, but also as a cherished colleague and peer who approaches each interaction with kindness and positivity.
