Born and raised in the quaint village of Peninsula, Ohio, Lori Reinhart-Mercer grew up surrounded by the picturesque landscape of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, historical and natural wonders, and a deeply rooted sense of community. Her journey beyond Peninsula led her to Ohio University, where she pursued a passion for animal behavior, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology. Following this, a shift into healthcare beckoned, prompting her to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Goshen College in Indiana. Immediately diving into the healthcare sector, she began a career at a local hospital, where she dedicated 15 years of service, while also founding and managing a doula business for a decade.
Throughout her tenure in healthcare, she engaged in various research initiatives across the country, which ultimately led her to the Duke Center for Autism. Lori joined the Autism Center in 2016 as a research coordinator for the ABC-Social Development Main Study, and currently serves as the coordinator for the ABC-Social Development follow up studies. In addition to acting as a research coordinator, Lori also works within the center’s Dissemination and Outreach Core, where she plans community events, advocates for neurodiversity in educational settings, and builds connections with community partners. Lori loves working with the many innovative thinkers at the center and cherishes the opportunity to collaborate across Duke, implementing solutions that enhance the collective impact, and empowering individuals to excel.
Outside of work, she prioritizes family time, travel, and continued learning. With her three adult children and grandchildren scattered across the country she now shares her home with various rescue animals and foster pets. She has an adventurous spirit and a contagious positivity that spreads to everyone she meets. If you happen to see Lori at one of our events or in the halls of the Duke Center for Autism, please take a moment to celebrate her many contributions and achievements!
