Originally trained as a physicist with a focus on quantum information theory, Dr. Sam Brandsen brings a new perspective and fresh ideas to research here at the Center for Autism. Sam completed his Ph.D. in Physics here at Duke University in 2021, but during his studies, he became increasingly interested in autism research. As an autistic individual and parent to an autistic child, Sam is especially interested in understanding quality of life in autistic individuals and learning ways to help improve the well-being of autistic individuals across the lifespan.
Since joining our team in 2022, Sam has led several initiatives within the Autism Center, Duke, and the Durham community to educate people on neurodiversity, improve the experience of participating in research for autistic individuals, and evaluate policies and procedures that may be inequitable for neurodivergent individuals. Sam co-leads the Neurodiversity Taskforce within the Center for Autism, and is also a part of Neurodiversity Connections within Duke. Sam has completed and published research on biases against autistic individuals within artificial intelligence models. His passion for advocacy is infectious, his work ethic and drive is a model we all strive towards, and his unique perspective is invaluable in helping to generate and frame new questions and research projects.
Sam's goals include improving access to healthcare for autistic individuals, understanding the needs of autistic individuals from underrepresented groups, and developing training and policies to promote the basic human rights of autistic individuals. Fundamentally, Sam is incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work in autism research – not many people are able to turn their hobbies and passions into a career.
Outside of work, Sam loves to cook, especially for others, and even forages for wild mushrooms in the woods with his child – YUM! Sam is extremely extroverted and loves making connections with people; so, if you see him around, thank him for his many contributions and strike up a conversation!
